KuLaDig RLP - Cultural heritage as a virtual experience

Experience the industrial and economic history of the Eisenberg region The project of the city of Eisenberg was concerned with the appealing preparation of cultural heritage and making it digitally available - or even experienceable. As one of 11 pilot communities in Rhineland-Palatinate, Eisenberg was selected as a test community for the KuLaDig Internet platform and app of the same name after a successful application in December 2019. Under the guiding theme "Mineral Resources from Roman Times to Today," Eisenberg's industrial and economic history was compiled and made digitally available by the end of 2020. The necessary knowledge was provided by tour guides and contemporary witnesses, such as a former miner. A student project group from the University of Koblenz-Landau assisted in creating the contributions, which were then published via the KuLaDig app. Furthermore, the city of Eisenberg received start-up funding of €1,000 as part of the funding project, which was used to prepare the content of the articles, e.g. drone footage, professional photos, audio files or short videos. The digital offering is intended to address everyone who is interested in the city or region of Eisenberg, not least the citizens themselves. The aim is to develop the community and its identity and to initiate a discussion process with all those involved about a modern, cosmopolitan concept of home: What is important to us, what are we proud of, how was it in the past, where did Eisenberg originate, what do we want to make visible and usable? The digitally captured objects can be used via the Kuladig app or website, for example in schools or museums, connected to circular hiking trails or linked to events. The recognizability of regions and homelands plays an important role, especially in times of high spatial mobility. This applies both to people who have lived in a place for a long time and to those who want to make their home in a new place. In addition to the Digital Villages project, the KuLaDig project is another building block in the digital strategy of the Eisenberg community. The University of Koblenz-Landau, together with the Struktur- und Genehmigungsdirektion Süd in Neustadt, has already tested the digital recording of cultural objects in recent years. Since the beginning of 2019, the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Interior has now been supporting the Institute of Cultural Studies at the University of Koblenz-Landau, headed by Prof. Dr. Michael Klemm, in developing models for the digitization and diverse use of cultural heritage, particularly in rural areas. The University of Koblenz-Landau is also participating in the funding. The internet platform KuLaDig (Kultur Landschaft Digital) of the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (Rhineland Regional Council), which has already existed since 2002, serves as the technical basis (accessible via www.kuladig.de or the KuLaDig app).

Problem

Cultural heritage is dwindling

In four places, the cultural heritage, the experiences, stories, backgrounds and knowledge of the people who lived in our homeland are dwindling. This is where digitization can be extremely helpful in making this valuable well available for the long term. The use of various media, such as images, sound, videos and co can be assembled into a multimedia experience here.
