FREIRÄUMEThe FREIRÄUME (Open Spaces) are part of the "Smarter, Sustainable Tourism" funding project of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region Association (VRRN), which launched in 2021. The VRRN, the Rhine-Neckar district, and the city of Heidelberg are working closely together on this project. The project aims to strengthen digitalization and sustainability in the region and promote equal living conditions in urban and rural areas. As part of the FREIRÄUME project, multifunctional spaces are being created in Eberbach, Meckesheim, and Neckargemünd. The concept focuses primarily on three pillars: - "Coworking": The "Coworking" pillar aims to provide suitable alternatives to working from home through well-equipped workspaces and digital infrastructure. These flexible spaces are particularly attractive to freelancers, commuters, and students. The shared spaces facilitate mutual learning and the development of a community for knowledge exchange and social interaction. This brings together people who would never otherwise meet in their normal work environment, fostering new ideas and innovations. - "Smart Tourism" Pillar: The "Smart Tourism" pillar provides open spaces for art and culture. This ranges from virtual tourist information and exhibitions to digital discovery trails. The use of digital technologies makes tourism in the region and beyond more tangible and engaging. - "Open Spaces" Pillar: The "Open Spaces" pillar creates meeting places for diverse user groups, addressing the existing space shortage in many communities. Whether it's music school meetings, yoga classes, readings, exhibitions, or a repair café: there are no limits to creativity. These open spaces address the needs and ideas of local residents and invite their participation. Citizen involvement through workshops, surveys, and active participation is particularly important in this project. After all, the local residents themselves know best what their community needs – and where potential lies. Only through their participation can these ideas be brought to life. Objectives - Vibrant town centers: The community is strengthened, vacant spaces are revitalized, and thus the quality of life in the municipalities is improved. - Flexible work opportunities: OPEN SPACES enable modern forms of work, offer alternatives to working from home, and foster the development of new networks. - Model: The concepts developed here are intended to offer added value to other municipalities in the metropolitan region by gathering experience and using it sustainably for the development of further OPEN SPACES beyond the scope of this project. Even during the ongoing project months, there is already close collaboration between the pilot municipalities, which is to be further strengthened.

This means that we have been observing and reacting to current social challenges and new needs in the city of Mannheim for more than 90 years. We are constantly adapting our services in order to fulfill our mission. AWO - THE PEOPLE AT THE CENTER At Arbeiterwohlfahrt, the heart is not just a symbol, it is a message: the individual person is at the center of everything we do. The district association maintains 15 inpatient facilities and over 30 outpatient assistance, advice and support services. This is made possible by our most important asset: our approx. 650 employees. AWO - MEMBERSHIP AND COMMITMENT The welfare association in Mannheim is supported by 12 local associations with around 850 members who are committed to a socially just society through their voluntary work.
