The city of Heidelberg is committed to child-friendly traffic planning in order to make the streets in residential and mixed-use areas safer and more attractive for children and young people. They are perceived as independent interest groups whose needs and interests are taken into account in the planning processes. One focus is on safe crossing aids. Conflict-free traffic lights with sufficiently long green phases and child-friendly equipment, such as low-mounted switches, should make it easier to cross roads. Crossing aids are provided in particular in front of schools, day-care centres, playgrounds and at public transport stops to make frequently used routes safer. Traffic calming plays a central role. In residential areas, a 30 km/h speed limit will be introduced, supported by measures such as road narrowing, speed bumps and central islands. The aim is to effectively reduce traffic speeds and increase safety. Footpaths and cycle paths are also being optimized. Wide, barrier-free footpaths and clearly separated cycle paths with adequate lighting are intended to promote the mobility of children. Cycle paths will be planned near schools, sports facilities and leisure facilities, supplemented by suitable parking facilities for bicycles, including those suitable for children's bicycles. Public transport will also be adapted. Stops will be designed to be barrier-free and equipped with child-friendly information. Vehicles will be equipped with child-height stops and sufficient space for baby carriages and bicycles. Public transport will be made even more attractive for families thanks to short cycle times and low fares.
