The FREIRÄUME are part of the funding project "Smarter, Sustainable Tourism" of the Rhine-Neckar Regional Association (VRRN). VRRN, the Rhine-Neckar district and the city of Heidelberg are working closely together within this framework. The sub-project is expected to release investments totaling around four million euros in the participating municipalities during the implementation phase. As part of the FREIRÄUME project, multifunctional spaces are to be created in several municipalities. The concept essentially focuses on three modules: In the "coworking" module, the FREIRÄUME are to offer well-equipped workplaces for commuters, freelancers and startups, and optionally even for craftsmen and artists. In the "smart tourism" module, the spaces can be ready for art and culture, from virtual tourism information to exhibitions to digital experience paths. In the "open spaces" module, there is the possibility of a neighborhood meeting place, for example with an adjoining café. Above all, however, this is also intended to counteract the pressing shortage of space for institutions and associations such as the music school or adult education centers.
