Where do we stand in the region?

  • The MRN has significant potential in the areas of residual biomass, CO2 utilization, and biomass waste, which can be harnessed for bioeconomy purposes. Further development of these areas for bioeconomy holds significant importance for both the economic and structural advancement of the MRN, as well as for environmental and climate protection in the region.

  • Key prerequisites for the use of biogenic residues in their production processes, as identified by companies in the MRN, include a sufficiently high market demand for such products and the presence of favorable legal frameworks. Additionally, the sufficient availability of high-quality biomass is an important requirement.

  • The greatest potentials for ensuring such favorable frameworks are seen in the creation of new value chains and the improvement of legal frameworks. Knowledge and technology transfer, as well as pilot plants, are also perceived as important levers.

What are we advocating for?

Creating transparency, strengthening new value chains
We address material flows in the MRN. The goal is to create transparency about the supply and demand of residues and technologies. In this way, opportunities arise to identify and process previously unused material flows. This can lead to the creation of new value chains in the MRN.
Advance awareness-raising, provide knowledge and technology transfer
We aim to ensure that businesses and people in the region are aware of the benefits of the bioeconomy. That's why we advocate for companies to showcase their successful approaches as best practices. Together with local stakeholders, we work to simplify and make the bioeconomy tangible on the ground.
Discuss barriers, address solutions
In the legal domain, there are barriers to expanding the bioeconomy in the MRN. We discuss these with stakeholders in the MRN, develop solution proposals, and address them to the relevant authorities in politics, municipalities, and business.

What measures do we want to implement?

Pilot Project: Upcycling Instead of Drain Pipes in Haßmersheim

We accompany this pilot project in Haßmersheim, where used cooking fats and oils are collected from private households and processed into biofuel. This tests whether an unused resource can be tapped into this way.

Regional Resource Exchange Platform

As part of the strategy, we are examining whether and how a regional resource exchange platform can be established in the MRN. This platform would allow resources such as residues and by-products to be offered or requested.

Bioeconomy Roadshow in Municipalities

With a roadshow, we introduce the basics and potentials of the bioeconomy to the interested public. The roadshow can integrate into existing events organized by associations and municipalities locally.

Roundtable Formats

As part of the strategy, we are examining the barriers to the bioeconomy in the MRN. We discuss these with our stakeholders. The goal is to develop concrete proposals and address them to relevant authorities.

Funding Consultation

We provide guidance to stakeholders in the region on tenders in the field of bioeconomy and also support in financial acquirement.

MRN Metropolitan Atlas

We are working to increase the visibility of the bioeconomy in the MRN. To do this, we are using the MRN Metropolitan Atlas and supplementing it with content related to bioeconomy.
